Fourth Quarter Surge Leads Dukes To Senior Day Win

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison lacrosse scored five times in the fourth quarter to propel itself to a 14-11 victory against Delaware at Sentara Park on Saturday.
The 11th-ranked Dukes improved to 12-4 (5-0) on the season while the Blue Hens dropped to 5-10 (2-3).

Redshirt sophomore Isabella Peterson lead JMU on the day, scoring all four of her goals in the second half. She also secured six draw controls to lead the Dukes. Redshirt senior Molly Dougherty made 11 saves on a .500 percentage, her fourth game with double-digit saves this season. Redshirt junior Mairead Durkin caused two Delaware turnovers and scooped three ground balls.

The program celebrated six seniors before the game – Brittany Bill, Lilly Byrne, Katie Checkosky, Dougherty, Ava Frantz and Emma Greenhill.

With the win, the Dukes have clinched at least a share of the conference regular season championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 4, Delaware 2
Delaware scored two of the first three goals before JMU scored the final three of the period. Two of the four goals were scored by seniors, as Bill and Frantz both got on the board. Dougherty made four saves in the quarter.
Second Quarter – James Madison 6, Delaware 5
JMU held a pair of three-goal leads before the Blue Hens scored twice to cut the deficit to one. Dougherty made another four stops in the period, while all six first-half goals were scored from different JMU sticks.
Third Quarter – Delaware 10, James Madison 9
The Dukes scored the first two goals of the quarter to take an 8-5 lead before Delaware scored five straight in a span of 6:07. Redshirt junior Kacey Knobloch broke the run in the final minute to cut the deficit to one. Delaware outdrew JMU 7-2 in the quarter.

JMU took an 11-10 lead in the first three minutes before Delaware responded to tie the game. Peterson scored to break the tie with 6:49 left before scoring another to extend the lead just 2:30 later. Frantz put the game away with a goal in the final minute.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- JMU has its first nine-game win streak since winning nine in a row from March 30 to May 5, 2019.
- This was JMU's first win this season in which it trailed in the fourth quarter.
- After being out-shot in each of the first three quarters, the Dukes out-shot the Blue Hens 10-4 in the fourth.
- Durkin marked her 10th game this season in which she had multiple caused turnovers and ground balls.
- After committing nine turnovers in the first half, the Dukes committed just two in the second. JMU was also 6-for-6 in clears in the second half.
RECORD WATCH
- Peterson is up to 63 goals for the season which ranks fourth all-time in a single season. She is the fifth Duke to score 60 in program history.
- Redshirt junior Rachel Matey added three draws to her total, moving her to 189 for her career and into second all-time in JMU history.
- Durkin now has 41 caused turnovers and has moved into a tie for third for a single season with Alivian Coates in 2000.
