HARRISONBURG, Va. – After tying the game in the seventh inning, James Madison baseball gave up a trio of runs in the top of the tenth inning to fall to UNCW, 7-4, on Thursday evening at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes drop to 26-25, 11-10 while the Seahawks move to 30-21, 14-8.
Â
Redshirt senior Liam McDonnell went a career-high seven innings on the mound, giving up four runs while striking out two. Redshirt junior Travis Reifsnider went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and three RBI's to lead the Dukes at the plate.
Â
How It Happened
A pair of home runs got the Dukes on the board in the first inning, as freshman Ryan Dooley began the inning with a home run to right field. Redshirt sophomore Mason Dunaway singled after Dooley's home run, and then two batters later Reifsnider would make it 3-0 with his 13th blast of the season.
Â
UNCW began to chip at the lead in the fourth, getting a run in on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff double. Two innings later, the Seahawks took the lead as they scored three runs to make it 4-3 through six innings.
Â
In the seventh, sophomore Jalen Buster drew a one-out walk and was followed by redshirt junior Kyle Novak getting hit by a pitch. Reifsnider stepped up and hit a ground rule double into left center, tying the game at four by scoring Buster.
Â
The two teams would go quiet the next two innings to force extra innings. UNCW was able to break the tie in the top of the tenth, as a leadoff single came around to score on a throwing error. A home run would follow the error to make it 7-4. The Dukes were able to bring the tying run up to the plate in the bottom half of the inning, but a strikeout ended the game.
