Â
The Dukes move to 27-25, 12-10 and snap their five-game losing streak while winning their most league games since 2016. The Seahawks fall to 30-22, 14-9.
Â
Sophomore Ryan Murphy started and went 3.1 innings, while graduate student Anthony Piccolino tossed a career-high 5.2 innings of relief and only gave up two hits. Four different redshirt juniors recorded three hits to lead the team at the plate in Trevon Dabney (3-for-5), Kyle Novak (3-for-5), Nick Zona (3-for-4) and Carson Bell (3-for-5).
Â
How It Happened
UNCW got on the board first with a run in the first, but the Dukes responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Novak knocked in the first run, while freshman Ryan Dooley and Bell both provided bases loaded two-run singles.
Â
The Dukes then added three runs in each of the next two innings with a trio of long balls. Novak and freshman Fenwick Trimble went back-to-back in the second inning, with Novak's shot being a two-run homer, before Dabney hit a three-run homer in the third for his eighth of the season.
Â
After going down 11-1 through three innings, UNCW scored five runs in the top of the fourth. Freshman Coleman Calabrese got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a single into left field. The bats remained hot in the fifth, as the Dukes added three more runs to take a 15-6 lead behind a double from redshirt junior Travis Reifsnider, a sacrifice fly from Dooley and an RBI infield single off the bat of Zona.
Â
The JMU bats then cooled down for the remainder of the game, but Piccolino kept the Seahawks' bats quiet as well. He entered in the fourth inning and did not allow a run while striking out three. He gave up two hits while walking two to earn the victory.
Â
