RICHMOND, Va. – Two James Madison student-athletes in women's golf's
Carly Lyvers and track & field's
Shelby Staib have been recognized as 2021-22 recipients of the CAA Leadership and Sports Excellence Award, the Colonial Athletic Association announced.
The award mimics the Chuck Boone Leadership Award in football and the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award in men's and women's basketball. One student-athlete, who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements, was selected in each of the other 19 sports sponsored by the Conference. The CAA's Faculty Athletic Representatives selected the winners.
In the five-year history of the award, JMU has produced a total of 15 honors from 13 student-athletes. Lyvers becomes the first JMU women's golfer to receive the award, while Staib is the third JMU track & field standout to reel in the accolade.
Lyvers, a Dean's List student, was an active member of JMU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She served a two-year role as co-chair of the communications subcommittee and was a rising force behind JMU's SAAC campaigns. On the course, she competed in 15 rounds across five events for the Dukes, helping them win a team title this year at the River Landing Classic. She posted her lowest career scoring average at 77.13 and also carded single-round (70) and 54-hole (219) career bests at the ECU Ironwood Invitational. Lyvers graduated from JMU with a bachelor's degree in communication studies and will serve as a brand strategy intern in the NCAA post-graduate program in Indianapolis.
Staib, who is a President's List student double majoring in computer information systems and finance, is coming off another solid season. JMU's all-time leader in the javelin, she qualified for the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary in the event. Staib set the program record at the Raleigh Relays with a throw of 48.92 meters while also winning with throws at the JMU Invitational and Liberty Twilight Qualifier. She also took second at the ECAC Championship to earn All-East honors. Staib previously was the bronze medalist at the 2021 CAA Championship and advanced to the East Preliminary that year. Staib is a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection and currently holds a 3.979 GPA.
