NEW ORLEANS – James Madison track and field athletes
Holly Mpassy, Shelby Staib and
Miranda Stanhope were recognized for their achievements in the classroom as the trio were named All-Academic Athletes by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), as announced by the organization Wednesday afternoon.Â
Mpassy, a computer science major, caps off her impressive rookie season with the USTFCCCA honor. The sprinter ended her first season in Harrisonburg as the JMU record holder for the indoor 400m (54.10) and second on the top 10 list in the outdoor 400m (54.78) The Orpington, England native earned VaSID All-State honors for both the indoor 4x100m and 400m and took home All-East honors in the indoor 400m, outdoor 400m and both the outdoor 4x100m and 4x400m relays.Â
Staib takes home the USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete award for the second-straight season. The finance major set the program record in the javelin with her throw of 48.92m at the Raleigh Relays, qualifying for the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary. Staib earned All-East in the javelin at the 2022 ECAC Outdoor Championship with her second-place finish of 46.97m. The junior also picked up VaSID Second Team All-State recognition.Â
Stanhope earned USTFCCCA All-Academic status after a successful season on the track. An exercise science major, Stanhope ran the second-fastest indoor 5,000m time in program history with her mark of 16:27.60 at the ECAC Championships to earn All-East honors. On the outdoor track, the sophomore qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary round in the 10,000m when she clocked in at 34:22.41 at the Raleigh Relays, ranking third on the JMU all-time top 10 list.Â
The James Madison track and field team was named an All-Academic Team, having achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.16.Â
