WASHINGTON, Pa. – James Madison right-handed pitcher
Justin Showalter has signed a professional contract with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League.
Â
Showalter becomes the third Duke to enter the pro ranks following the 2022 season, joining
Chase DeLauter and
Nick Zona who were drafted in the MLB Draft earlier this month.
Â
The Bridgewater, Va. native, who went to local Turner Ashby High School before pitching for JMU from 2018-22, is coming off a season where he earned four wins and pitched to a 5.10 ERA. He led the pitching staff with 72.1 innings pitched and 67 strikeouts, as he made 14 starts that included a complete game.
Â
Over his five-year career, Showalter made 44 appearances on the mound with 33 starts. Of those 33 starts, two were complete games including the program's first one-hitter in 11 years in 2020. He finishes with a record of 10-13 with a 4.21 ERA across 184 innings while striking out 151 batters to 44 walks.
Â
Showalter finished tied for third in walks per nine innings (2.15) and eighth in opposing batting average (.251) for a career in program history. In 2020, he strung together 24.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, the second longest streak a Duke had put together since 1995. He earned VaSID All-State First Team honors in 2020.
Â
Showalter becomes the fifth Duke to sign their first pro contract with the Wild Things.
