RICHMOND, Va. – James Madison had a solid showing at the Richmond City UTR Open, with
Holden Koons and
Julian Lozano claiming flight titles at VCU's Thalheimer Tennis Center.
The trio consisting of Koons, Lozano and
Youssef Sadek combined to go 8-5 at the event, which was held Sept. 23-25. That included a 2-4 mark in group play and 6-1 record in flight play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Group Play
In group two, Sadek fell to VCU's Rayne Stable in heartbreaking fashion, dropping a 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) decision in match one. He followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Roman Sancilio, who competed as an individual not with a team.
Koons dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to VCU's Sam Baumgartner in his opening match before coming back with a 6-1, 6-1 victory versus Albert Porsmyr Hansen from William & Mary to split his matches in group four.
Rounding out early play in group eight was Lozano, who fell in both matches to VCU's Etienne Marty (7-5, 6-4) and W&M's Andres Silva (6-1, 7-6 (1)).
Flight Play
Koons dominated play in Flight B, dropping a total of nine games en route to a 3-0 record and a flight championship. He cruised past W&M's Daniel Cohen, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals before turning in a pair of 6-2, 6-2 wins over W&M's Bill Duo and Joseph Brailovsky.
Sadek also played in Flight B, falling in the quarters to Brailovsky, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (0).
Lozano came back strong in Flight C play, winning a pair of straight-set matches to reach the final where he won a super tiebreaker to claim the flight. He began with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against VCU's Gray Voelzke in the quarterfinals before taking down Porsmyr Hansen, 6-3, 6-1 in the semis. In the final, he rallied past W&M's Pellerito by a score of 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4).
UP NEXT
The duo of Koons and Sadek return to action in Tulsa, Okla., at the ITA All-American Championships, which takes place Oct. 1-9 at the University of Tulsa. The rest of the team is back on the courts on Oct. 7-9 at the River City Tennis Open in Richmond.
