TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – James Madison volleyball finished off its trip to Florida with a five-set win (18-25, 26-24, 27-29, 25-21, 15-12) over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon at the Al Lawson Center.
The Dukes improved to 4-2 through two weeks, while the Rattlers fell to 0-7.
Miëtte Veldman tied her season high with 22 kills and
Caroline Dozier tallied a season-high 49 assists.
Annie Smith matched her career high in kills with seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Both teams went point for point in the first set, but a 4-0 run from FAMU put the Rattlers 16-10 and the Dukes were unable to catch back up.
Second Set
The Dukes got off to a hot 5-0 start, which the Rattlers caught up to. It was head-to head with both teams having good runs in the end, but JMU pulled out a 26-24 win to wrap up the frame.
Third Set
Florida A&M out-paced JMU early, taking a 11-5 lead. The Dukes closed that lead, taking a 23-21 lead, but the Rattlers took the set 29-27.
Fourth Set
In another close set, the Dukes set the pace with a 8-4 lead. They were able to maintain that advantage until the Rattlers caught up at 18-17. JMU was able to pull out the final points, however, to take the match to a fifth set.
Fifth Set
A 5-0 run from the Dukes pulled them ahead in the final set and the Rattlers were unable to recover, securing the win for JMU.
UP NEXT
The Dukes will head up to Baltimore, Md. To face UMBC on Friday, Sept. 9 and Niagara Saturday, Sept. 10 to finish off tournament play.
