Miëtte Veldman tied her career high with 25 kills in James Madison's 3-2 (26-24, 19-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11) Sun Belt volleyball victory over Texas State on Friday evening at Strahan Arena.

The Dukes improved to 9-3 (3-0), while the Bobcats fell to 10-5 (2-1).

"What a battle against an outstanding Texas State team," said head coach
Lauren Steinbrecher. "Huge props to our entire team for finding a way to gut out a win on the road. I am excited to get another chance to compete tomorrow. Go Dukes!"

Danielle Nathan and
Sophie Davis followed Veldman with 16 kills each. Davis led the team with five blocks, followed by
Annie Smith with four.
Caroline Dozier was just two short of her career high in assists with 54.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The Dukes took an early lead, taking the game to 21-15 with six blocks in that time. The Bobcats responded with a 9-1 run to take a 24-23 lead. A 3-0 run from JMU wrapped up the set.

Second Set
The set started off even, but a 3-0 run gave Texas State a 20-16 lead which the Dukes could not catch up to.

Third Set
In another neck-and-neck set, small 2-0 runs from the Dukes gave them the edge later on in the set. A final 3-0 run put JMU back in the lead in the match.

Fourth Set
Both teams were evenly matched in the fourth set with the Bobcats taking the set 25-22.

Fifth Set
Veldman led the fifth set with six kills, slamming the final one into the hands of the opponents to win the grueling five-set match.

The Dukes return on Saturday to take on Texas State in the second match of the weekend at 1 p.m. EST (12 pm CST). The match will be streamed on ESPN+.
