HARRISONBURG, Va. – Senior
Lidia Nduka and sophomore
Amanda Attanasi both found the back of the net to help lead James Madison past Northern Colorado, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer on Thursday evening at Sentara Park.
The Dukes have yet to concede a goal in the first half this season and move to 4-1-2, while the Bears take their first loss of the season and drop to 4-1-2.
A trio of Dukes got off two shots in Attanasi, classmate
Sophia Verrecchia and freshman
Y-Van Nguyen as JMU outshout UNC 13-5. Redshirt freshman
Rachel Bump started the match in goal before redshirt sophomore
Haley Stoup took over to start the second half. She made three saves and earned her second win of the season.
How It Happened
- JMU came out on the attack, setting up a corner kick in the second minute and a shot from redshirt sophomore Caley Zack in the third minute that was saved.
- Verrecchia had a pair of shots in the 11th and 14th minutes, her first being saved while her second just missed wide.
- The Dukes broke the scoreless tie in the 27th minute, as redshirt sophomore Sammie Sipes fed a through ball to Nduka who took it and fired the ball into the right corner of the ball from atop the left side of the box.
- JMU took all nine shots in the first 45 minutes, and had a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks.
- The Dukes continued the attack in the second half, with redshirt sophomore Madie Vincent firing a shot on goal in the 48th minute. The Bears took their first shot of the match two minutes later.
- In the 78th minute, JMU doubled its lead as Nduka dribbled along the end line in the box and shot a pass to Attanasi who was standing in front of the goal. Attanasi took the pass and made a quick move to get it in the back of the net. It is the second time this season Nduka has scored a goal and assisted on another in the same match.
- JMU had a chance to put a third goal on the board, but senior Amanda Sevcsisin's shot in the 90th minute was saved.
- Northern Colorado got on the board with seven seconds remaining in the match, as Britney Donais took a shot that was saved by Stoup, but Melina Faris sent the rebound straight into the goal.
Game Notes
- Attanasi has now eclipsed her goal total from last season. She has scored a goal in all four of JMU's wins.
- Nduka's goal and assist are the second each this season. It is the first time she has had multiple goals or assists in a season.
Quoting Head Coach Joshua Walters, Sr.
"This is a 'take the result and move on' kind of game for us. We did not play up to our standard, but still found a way to win and often that is a measure of a good team. Now we let go of this game and start preparing for the Oregon State Beavers."
