HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison could not erase a 15-point halftime deficit on Saturday night, dropping a 71-62 decision to App State in Sun Belt Conference men's basketball at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The Dukes (11-6, 2-2 SBC) tried to mount a comeback, holding App State (9-8, 2-2) to just 32 points on a 34.6% (9-26) shooting performance after halftime, but couldn't overcome a 4-for-26 (15.4%) performance from the three-point line on the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The two teams traded baskets in the early minutes, combining to hit seven of their first nine attempts from the field. However, JMU immediately went cold, going 8:38 without a made field goal as the Mountaineers used a 16-4 run across that span to take a 25-12 lead.
App State continued expanding its lead throughout the half, eventually going up 39-20 with 1:03 to play before the Dukes scored the final four points of the half.
Second Half
After a series of turnovers, JMU did not score its first points of the half until the 16:45 mark in the second period, with App State pushing the lead to as many as 52-32 with 10:34 to play in the game.
JMU would eventually run off 10 straight points to close the gap to 60-51 at the 4:26 mark, but the Mountaineers responded with a three-pointer and a putback layup with 2:13 left to put things out of reach.
The Dukes continued battling, scoring seven straight points across a 20-second period in the final minute, but could get no closer than 68-62 with 26 seconds to play before App State put the game away at the foul line.
