SPARTANBURG, S.C. –
Václav Tichý registered a career-best third-place effort to help the James Madison men's golf team finish runner-up Tuesday at The Carolina Cup, hosted by USC Upstate at the par-72, 6,996-yard Carolina Country Club.
Tichý closed his tournament with his third straight even-par 72 to earn the sophomore a solo third-place finish on the 83-player leaderboard. His three-round score of even-par 216 was four strokes behind UAB's Seb Cave for the individual title.
As a team, JMU grabbed the sole runner-up finish in the 15-team tournament with scores of 306-289-287, improving its scores every round.
Despite going into the clubhouse only two strokes behind Kennesaw State, the Owls closed strong and took home the title by four strokes. After JMU tied for eighth at the season-opening Streamsong Invitational, the Dukes have tied for first or second in three straight tournaments.
Senior
Alexandre D'Aurelle de Paladines fired a career-low 67 (-5) in the third round, the third straight tournament he has carded a career-low. He improved his scores in every circuit (81-77-67) and finished tied for 34th with a 54-hole score of 225 (+9).
After he carded three consistent rounds of 75-74-74,
Nick Schlickenrieder earned a tie for 22nd with a 54-hole score of 223 (+7), marking the third top-25 performance for the redshirt senior in four fall tournaments. Meanwhile, sophomore
Owen Kose (79-69-76) turned in his best performance of the fall, finishing one stroke behind Schlickenrieder to tie for 28th with a score of 224 (+8).
After he posted rounds of 80-74-74, junior
Daniel Cheng rounded out the JMU contingent with a 44th-place finish and a 54-hole score of 228 (+12).
