KANSAS CITY, Mo. – James Madison redshirt junior Evan Southern added another honor to his belt this week, being tabbed as the United Soccer Coaches Men's Soccer Division I National Player of the Week, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
Earlier in the week, Southern was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week while also being tabbed to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and an honorable mention to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week.
The South Glastonbury, Conn. native produced a four-goal week as he helped the Dukes to a pair of 3-1 wins over Old Dominion and Georgia State. He began the week by scoring an equalizing goal against the Monarchs that began a three-goal second half that JMU used to snap a seven-match winless streak and earn a win in the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge. He then followed that up with the first JMU hat trick since 2019, providing all the scoring for the Dukes to take down the Panthers and jump into fourth place in the conference with nine points.
Southern recorded his seventh multi-goal match of his career. While at JMU, he has also recorded two braces that followed a career at Iowa Western CC that saw him record a brace and three hat tricks that included a five-goal performance.
The forward now has six goals and four assists for 16 points to lead the side in both goals and points. The Dukes now sit with a record of 6-3-5, 2-2-3 SBC.
JMU will be back on the pitch on Friday, Oct. 27 when it hosts Georgia Southern at Sentara Park for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
