Dukes Claim Pair of Flight Titles, Close Fall at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – James Madison men's tennis closed the fall tournament season with a pair of flight titles at the Wake Forest Invitational, which was held Nov. 3-5 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.

The team of Edson Sanchez and Francisco Sinopoli claimed the B1 doubles flight title after going 3-0 as a tandem. Harrison Lee also went unbeaten in D4 singles flight with a 3-0 mark. On the whole, JMU won four doubles matches and 11 singles bouts.

Joining Lee with multiple singles wins at the event were Aathreya Mahesh and Mario Pena, who both went 2-1 and advances to flight title matches.

Doubles Play

Sanchez and Sinopoli opened the tournament Friday with doubles wins against UNCG's Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz (6-3) and Georgia Southern's Matthew Mitchell and Pierre Mouesca (7-5) to advance to the final.
On Saturday, the duo rolled past Cleveland State's Lincoln Battle and Devin Boyer (6-1) to take home the B1 doubles crown.
JMU's only other doubles win came in the B3 doubles flight, where Esteve Agusti and Mahesh downed Furman's Cole Burnam and Ben Cahill (6-4) in a consolation match.

Singles Play

Lee capped off his first fall season going 3-0 in D4 singles. He began with a 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory against Shenandoah's Jovan Cirkovic. He fended off Cleveland State's Alan Matyias, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinals before winning by default in the final versus Radford's Charles Courteau.
In the C2 singles bracket, Mahesh began the week with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph against Davidson's Nicolas Pinzon. After downing Bluefield State's Luis Agullo Diaz Munio, 6-3, 6-2, in the semis, he dropped a three-set affair in the title match to North Carolina A&T's Ian Pedersen by scores of 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-1.
Over in the D2 singles flight, Pena cruised past Radford's Filippo Marangoni, 6-1, 6-1. He pulled away in three against Georgia Southern's Matthew Mitchell, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, before dropping a 6-3, 6-4 decision in the final to Davidson's Jerry Wang.
Julian Lozano picked up a consolation win over Tennessee Tech's Alex Alvarez, 6-1, 6-1 in B1 singles.
In the B2 bracket, Youssef Sadek and Esteve Agusti each claimed a win against Tennessee Tech's Lucas Bitzer. Sadek won his match, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Agusti rolled 6-1, 6-4.
Sinopoli also won an opening-round match in C1 with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory against NC A&T' Lucas Coupu-Moison.

JMU has completed fall tournament play and gets set for the spring dual season, which will kick off in January. The spring slate will be announced in the coming weeks.
