HARRISONBURG, Va. – After a historic ascent up the AP Top 25 ranks, the James Madison University men's basketball team once again makes an appearance this week on the list, this time checking in at #20. The announcement, made on Monday, marks the fifth consecutive week that they have received a ranking since earning a ranking for the first time in program history on November 13th.
Â
This ranking follows the Dukes' triumph over in-state, and Sun Belt Conference, rival Old Dominion on Saturday night. JMU emerged from the Royal Rivalry with a commanding 84-69 win on the road, in front of a Chartway Arena attendance record 8,504 fans.  Despite falling two spots this week, they garnered their most points ever in the voting process (441).
Â
The victory gives JMU an impressive nine-game winning streak to begin the 2023-24 season, officially making it the best start in the program's history. This surpassed the records set by the 1981-82 and 1975-76 teams, both of which commenced their seasons with an 8-0 record.
Â
In addition to their status in the AP Top 25, JMU has climbed to the 27th position in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings, advancing six spots. The NET ranking is a comprehensive metric, which factors in game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses to assess team performance.
Â
Looking ahead, the Dukes will enjoy a week to prepare for Saturday, when they venture back to Virginia's southeastern coastline to face Hampton. Following this matchup, they return home to take on Coppin State on Tuesday, December 19th at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
