TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — With the game tied heading into the sixth inning, Florida State scored three runs to drop James Madison, 5-1, in the middle game of the series from Dick Howser Stadium in non-conference baseball Saturday afternoon.
Redshirt junior
Ryan Murphy earned a no-decision after tossing four strong innings, allowing an earned run and two hits while striking out one. Graduate
Jaylon Lee and redshirt junior
Mason Dunaway led the offense, both going 2-for-4.
Conner Whittaker earned the win for Florida State behind five innings of relief and four strikeouts.
How It Happened
Third Inning
The game saw its first score occur in the third inning, beginning with the first baserunner allowed by Murphy via a bunt single down to third base. Colten Vincent then followed with a single up the middle, but a fielding error by graduate
Jack Cone allowed both runners to advance an additional base. DeAmez Ross then grounded to second to score Nander De Sedas.
Fifth Inning
JMU tied the game at one after freshmen
Mike Mancini and
Aidan McDonald both got on by a walk and a hit by pitch, respectively, to lead the inning off. After both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, sophomore
Coleman Calabrese dropped a bunt that was fielded at the plate to nab a racing Mancini, but Vincent dropped the ball to give the Dukes the tying run.
Sixth Inning
Vincent made up for his error in the previous inning, leading off the sixth with a solo home run to give Florida State the lead again. A walk and a double directly followed the homer, with both runners coming around on a Jaime Ferrer single up the middle to allow the hosts to go into the seventh with a 4-1 lead.
Eighth Inning
Florida State added another run after stringing three consecutive singles together after a fly out to begin the leading, increasing its lead to 5-1.
Game Notes
- After a stellar four-year career at nearby Eastern Mennonite, Jaylon Lee has begun his JMU career with back-to-back two-hit games.
