Peterson Nets Eight as Dukes Romp to Third Straight Win

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Isabella Peterson tied her own single-game program record with eight goals as No. 13 James Madison lacrosse routed High Point by a score of 19-8 at Vert Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Dukes improved to a 3-1 mark on the season while the Panthers dropped to 1-2.

Peterson now holds two of the three eight-goal performances in JMU history. The other one was by Julie Martinez on April 11, 2000.

Peterson added an assist for nine points, one shy of her career high. Senior Tai Jankowski scored four goals for the second consecutive game. Junior Katelyn Morgan and Sophomore Savannah Derey each finished twice for the Dukes. Freshman Maddie Epke dished six assists and added a goal for a seven-point afternoon.

The JMU defense held its third straight opponent to eight goals or fewer. Mairead Durkin caused three turnovers while Marchetti and Rachel Matey each caused two. JMU also picked up 23 ground balls as a unit, with Matey leading the way with five.

For High Point, attacker Jordan Miles and midfielder Emma Genovese each put up a hat trick while goalkeeper Taylor Suplee made 10 saves, eight in the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – James Madison 4, High Point 2
After a scoreless opening five minutes, JMU went on a 3-0 run in 1:47 with goals from the sticks of Jankowski, Morgan and Peterson. Peterson closed JMU's scoring with her second of the quarter. The Dukes put eight shots on goal and drew eight fouls from High Point.
Second Quarter – James Madison 7, High Point 4
The Panthers scored the first two of the quarter, tying things at four with 7:03 left in the half. However, JMU went on another quick 3-0 run with two goals from Peterson and another from Derey. The Dukes out-drew the Panthers 5-1 in the period.
Third Quarter – James Madison 11, High Point 6
JMU continued the scoring run with two more tallies from Peterson and a goal from Epke to take a six-goal lead just 3:22 into the quarter. Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Boden came in for her first career action and marked her first collegiate saves.

Fourth Quarter – James Madison 19, High Point 8
JMU scored in bunches in the final quarter, with six different players finding the back of the net in the period. The Dukes added eight more draw controls to their total.

James Madison heads back to Harrisonburg to face current No. 6 Maryland on Wednesday, March 1. Wednesday's home opener will begin at 5 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+. The Terrapins knocked off No. 7 Florida in a thrilling 14-13 road victory earlier Saturday.

- Peterson scored at least five goals for the 14th time in her career including the 10th time in the last two seasons.
- She has 14 goals in two career road games played at High Point.

- The Dukes dominated in the draw circle, out-controlling High Point 21-10.
- The 23 ground balls were JMU's most in a game since 24 on April 16, 2022 at William & Mary and also the second-most in all games dating back to last season.
- Derey became the fourth Duke to score her first career goal this season.
- Durkin's three caused turnovers bring her up to 99 for her career, as she is one away from becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 100.
