RICHMOND, Va. – After winning the first matchup last week in Harrisonburg, James Madison swept the home-and-home with VCU on Tuesday afternoon behind a 14-6 win in non-conference baseball at The Diamond.
Â
The Dukes improve to 10-7 while the Rams fall to 6-11. The win is the first on the road for JMU against VCU since March 20, 2011, as they met for only the second time since that win.
Â
Graduate
Jack Cone moved to 3-0 as he earned the win, starting and tossing two hitless innings while giving up a run, walking two and striking two. Redshirt senior
Trevon Dabney and freshman
Mike Mancini led the way at the plate, as Dabney went 3-for-5 with a run scored and three RBI's and Mancini was a season-high 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three walks.
Â
How It Happened
First Inning
Dabney got the Dukes on top first, as the pitch ricocheted off the end of his bat with bases loaded. The ball rolled up along the first base line and hit off the bag just as Dabney touched it, allowing two runs to score in the process.
Â
VCU scored a run to respond after a one-out walk and two wild pitches put a runner on third. After a second walk, Brandon Eike hit a sacrifice fly to score the lead runner, but the trail runner was lost on the base paths and got doubled up at first base to end the inning.
Â
Second Inning
A pair of walks put runners on first and second base for JMU to draw a VCU pitching change. Redshirt junior
Mason Dunaway then stepped up and single up the middle to score Mancini to make it 3-1 in favor of JMU.
Â
Third Inning
The Dukes blew the game open in the third inning as they sent 14 batters to the plate and produced eight runs for an 11-1 lead. Cone, Dabney, redshirt senior
Kyle Novak, sophomore
Fenwick Trimble and freshman
Jack Cannizzaro all used singles to score runs, with Dabney's single plating one and then an additional run on a throwing error. The singles followed redshirt junior
Jacob Steinberg and
Jaylon Lee knocking in runs, with the former laying down a sacrifice bunt and the latter a double.
Â
Sixth Inning
The lead was increased to 11 runs, as freshman
Aidan McDonald hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory in shallow right field to allow Cannizzaro to score to make it 12-1.
Â
A pair of RBI doubles and a run scoring single plated three runs for the VCU response to make the score 12-4 through six innings.
Â
Eighth Inning
The Dukes eclipsed 13 runs in the eighth, as Dunaway laced a single into center field to score Cannizzaro and make it 13-4.
Â
VCU used a hit by pitch and a walk to get two on, before an interference call allowed the bases to load. A wild pitch allowed Casey Gibbs to score and a groundout followed to score a second run and make it 13-6.
Â
Ninth Inning
Redshirt sophomore
Grant Painter worked a full count walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a wild pitch to give JMU a 14-6 lead.
