JMU Sweeps George Mason in Midweek Doubleheader

James Madison's offensive firepower led them to their first victory of the night courtsey of KK Mathis's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Junior Alissa Humphrey started the game and dished four innings of work from the circle. Humphrey only allowed three runs, while allowing three walks and striking out six. Freshman Kylah Berry entered the contest in the fifth inning and earned the win. Berry allowed only one hit in her three innings of work while striking out four.

Freshman KK Mathis was the difference maker in the game when it was tied at five runs, hitting a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Dukes on top by four runs at 9-5.

Graduate students Hannah Shifflett and Avery Pinder and sophomore Jasmine Hall all led the offense with two hits apiece.

Graduate student Hallie Hall and junior Reed Butler also added one hit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shifflett tripled to score H. Hall to put JMU on the scoreboard first with a one-run lead.
- George Mason took the lead by plating three runs from four hits and an error in the top of the third inning.
- In the bottom of the third, JMU added two runs to tie the game at three runs apiece.
- H. Hall launched a solo home run to extend JMU's lead by one run in the fifth.
- George Mason pushed two runs across from back-to-back home runs to gain the lead by one run.
- J. Hall scored Pinder to tie the game at five runs.
- KK Mathis hit a grand slam to seal the deal for the Dukes.

James Madison ended their second victory of the night after an extra-innings battle that involved Mathis coming up clutch with a walk-off double in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Freshman Kylah Berry got the start and shoved 3.2 innings of work from the circle for James Madison. Berry only gave up a walk and two hits, while striking out four. Junior Alissa Humphrey came in during the fourth inning to shut things down. Humphrey allowed two runs and two walks while recording eight strikeouts.

Freshman Bella Henzler was stellar at the plate as well as behind it, recording a pair of hits and three RBI's.

Sophomore Kylee Gleason and freshman KK Mathis also added two hits during tonight's play.

Five different Dukes recorded a hit apiece as part of JMU's 11-hit effort.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Henzler hit a two-run RBI double to give the Dukes an early 2-0 lead.
- George Mason answered in the fourth inning with back-to-back home runs to tie the contest at two runs.
- Also in the fourth inning, Henzler singled to score Butler to push JMU ahead by one run.
- In the fifth, Shifflett smashed a solo shot to extend JMU's lead to two runs.
- George Masson tied things up at four runs in the sixth inning.
- Mathis hit a clutch double to score Gleason in the bottom of the eighth inning to walk the game off.

James Madison will host Georgia Southern for its second weekend of Sun Belt Conference play starting Friday, March 24 at 4 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.
