HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball fell into an eight-run hole to UMass Lowell but were able to cut the deficit in half on Sunday afternoon before ultimately falling, 12-5, in non-conference action at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Dukes fall to 6-5 while the River Hawks move to 2-7.

Redshirt freshman
T.R. Williams started for JMU and went two-plus innings, giving up three walks, four runs and five hits. Redshirt junior
Jacob Steinberg led the Dukes at the dish by going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBI's.

UML starter Nick DiRito earned his first win of the year behind five innings and four strikeouts.

How It Happened
Third Inning
UMass Lowell used four straight singles followed by a home run to take a 5-0 lead. After Gerry Siracusa knocked in the first run on a single, Fritz Genther hit a grand slam before the Dukes were able to record three outs.

Fourth Inning
Siracusa and Genther provided the runs in the next frame, as each recorded a double. Siracusa doubled in two runs while Genther drove in one for an 8-0 lead.

The Dukes responded in the bottom half with two runs of their own, as sophomore
Coleman Calabrese singled in Steinberg and freshman
Mike Mancini to make it 8-2.

Fifth Inning
Steinberg added a pair of runs for JMU in the fifth with his second jack of the season after sophomore
Fenwick Trimble led the inning off with a walk.

Seventh Inning
The visitors stopped JMU's momentum by extending their lead back to eight, using a two-run homer from Frank Wayman and then a two-run single from Siracuse for the 12-4 lead.

JMU took a run back in the home half of the inning, as redshirt senior
Kyle Novak led off the inning with a home run for his second of the season.

- The two teams combined for seven two-out RBI's (UML 3, JMU 4).
- Jason Schiavone threw out his sixth would be base stealer of the season. He came into the game one back of the league lead.
