Dukes Drop Game One to Troy

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison softball came up one run short in its first game of the Troy series on Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park for a final score of 9-8.

JMU dropped to 21-13 overall and 6-7 in Sun Belt conference play while Troy advanced to 29-11-1 with a 10-2-1 record in Sun Belt Conference action.

Junior Alissa Humphrey threw for 3.2 innings, recording three strikeouts, while freshman Kylah Berry was in the circle for 3.1 innings and recorded one strikeout.

Graduate student Hannah Shifflett was stellar at the plate, going 2-2 with two home runs, four RBI's and scoring two runs.

Sophomore Kylee Gleason led the Dukes with three hits, while freshman KK Mathis added two hits in the loss.

How It Happened
- The Trojans got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning when they scored two from one walk and one hit.
- JMU tied the game in the bottom of the first when Mathis blasted a two-run home run.
- Shifflett followed with another home run to put the Dukes ahead by one, 3-2, in the bottom of the first inning.
- Troy registered two runs in the third inning from a JMU fielding error.
- The Dukes regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Shifflett jacked her second home run of the day to bring three runs home.
- Troy added runs in the fifth inning when they plated three and drove in two more in the sixth.
- Bella Henzler smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Dukes trailed by one, 7-6.
