WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior goalkeeper
Brandelynn Heinbaugh stopped a career-high 16 shots as James Madison rolled past William & Mary 4-2 on Friday night at Busch Field.
JMU starts the season 1-0, winning its season opener for the fifth consecutive year. The Tribe begins the 2023 season 0-1 and will travel to #12 Wake Forest for a Sept. 1 tilt.
Heinbaugh saw William & Mary take 24 shots, 18 of which were on cage. Additionally, the defense faced 11 corners compared to the Dukes' three.
Offensively, James Madison was led by senior
Mia Julian (1g, 2a) and freshman
Azul Covarrubias (2g, 0a), who each registered four points in the win. Senior
Tori Carawan recorded one goal and a pair of helpers for three points, while classmate
Carissa Tambroni had a dual-assist performance.
How It Happened
- Julian broke the seal less than two minutes into the game with a slick assist from Carawan.
- After almost 30 minutes of scoreless play following Julian's strike, Carawan buried an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.
- Minutes later, the Dukes cashed in on a corner play, Covarrubias sent one past the William & Mary goalkeeper with assists from Julian and Tambroni.
- The Tribe responded just 15 seconds later to cut the deficit to two, 3-1, with 6:59 remaining in the third.
- With under eight minutes to go in the final period, Covarrubias found the back of the net again on a nearly identical play to give the Dukes a 4-1 advantage.
- William & Mary answered yet again off a corner play at the 3:40 mark but were stifled for the remainder of the contest.
Game Notes
- James Madison leads the all-time series against William & Mary, 41-24-6.
- Heinbaugh's 16-save performance marked the first time a JMU goalkeeper made double-digit saves in a single game since Florien Marcussen collected 11 in a 2-1 2OT victory over Northeastern on Nov. 5, 2021.
- Additionally, coming into the game, the Hershey, Pa. native's personal best was eight saves against #4 Iowa a season ago (Oct. 9).
- Tambroni's opened the season with two points after tallying just one point in her previous 20 games at JMU.
- Julian's quick strike was her first career goal. Moreover, her four points are a single-season high for the senior.
