HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1: JMU 25-22
Reid got the match started with a kill, and Veldman tallied four early kills to give the Dukes a 10-6 lead in the first, which forced an App State timeout. The Mountaineers battled back and tied it at 13 on a Reid attacking error. The two teams went back and forth, but a Veldman kill and block from
Rebecca Watkins gave the Dukes a slim 18-16 advantage. App State once again tied the set at 19 on a kill from Ambrose, but JMU answered with two straight points on a service error and a Helmich kill to pull ahead 21-19. The Dukes pulled away from there, taking the first set on Davis' third kill of the set.
Set 2: JMU 25-21
JMU scored six consecutive points and gained an early hold on the second set. After App State cut the lead to three on a double block from Lauren Pledger and Denny, the Dukes responded with three straight and extended the advantage to 10-4 thanks to two kills from Veldman and Smith. The Dukes maintained a comfortable margin throughout the set, but after a setting error from Veldman cut the JMU lead to three (15-12), she registered two kills and put the Dukes back out in front by five (17-12). App State tallied three straight to make it 20-18, but JMU scored five of the next eight points to close out the set.
Set 3: App State 25-19
Veldman kicked off the third with two kills and a block, which gave the Dukes an early 4-2 edge. That lead disappeared quickly, as the Mountaineers quickly responded with an 8-3 run that gave App State its largest lead of the match (10-7). The advantage grew to double digits (22-11) before the Dukes flipped a switch with a 7-0 run, which forced an App State timeout with the score at 23-19. The Mountaineers quickly regrouped and capitalized off two JMU errors, forcing a fourth set after taking the third 25-19.
Set 4: JMU 25-21
The Dukes jumped out to a 5-1 lead on an App State attacking error. The Mountaineers fought to make it 7-4 before four straight from JMU capped off by two solo blocks by Smith pushed the lead to 11-4. After App State trailed by as many as eight (14-6), the home team methodically clawed its way back into the set. First, a 6-1 run forced a Dukes' timeout which brought the set to 15-12. Davis answered back with two kills to make it 17-13, but Maya Winterhoff recorded an ace which brought App State to within one point (20-19). JMU responded with a service ace from
Julia McNeley which pushed the lead back to three (23-20), an advantage JMU would not give up as the Dukes opened Sun Belt play with a win.
