NORFOLK, Va. – James Madison saw solid results in their second fall tournament of the year, winning a combined 13 matches at the NYCC Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 22-24, hosted by Old Dominion University at both the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club and the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The event was played in a hidden-dual format, with three doubles matches and seven singles bouts each day for the Dukes.
JMU faced off with William & Mary on Friday, Old Dominion and Norfolk State on Saturday and finished with competitors from Virginia Tech, College of Charleston and Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday.
JMU's play was highlighted by a 2-1 showing from the doubles team of
Julian Lozano and
Youssef Sadek. Sadek led the Dukes with four total wins, also going 2-1 in singles. He was joined by
Esteve Agusti and
Harrison Lee, who also went 2-1 individually.
On Friday, JMU won two matches against the Tribe. Lozano and Sadek downed Bill Duo and Alexandre LeBlank, 6-3, while Sadek completed his strong day with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Konstantinos Raptis.
Doubles play highlighted Saturday's matches, as the Dukes went 3-0 in doubles and added three singles triumphs. Lozano and Sadek took down ODU's Jakob Cadonau and Codie van Schalkywk, 6-4. The team of Agusti and Mahesh downed ODU's Yanis Moundir and Aryan Saleh, 6-3, while Lee and
Edson Sanchez took a 6-3 decision from NSU's Deniz Okya and Jakub Solarski.
On the singles side, Agusti claimed a comeback win over ODU's Cadonau (4-6, 6-2, 6-3), Sanchez won a tight bout with NSU's Okya (7-6 (7), 6-4), and Lee fended off NSU's Solarski in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 7-5).
The weekend concluded with five more singles wins on Sunday, including two in three sets. Lozano pulled away from VT's Alberto Orso (6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2), while Agusti came back to beat VT's Matt Harper (1-6, 6-3, 4-1, ret.).
Claiming straight-set triumphs were Sadek against Charleston's Mattia Bernardi (6-0, 3-0, ret.),
Mario Pena over Charleston's Evan Pugh (6-4, 6-3) and Lee versus Virginia Wesleyan's Carlos Rullan (6-1, 6-2).
