HARRISONBURG, Va. – Facing a stingy App State defense and multiple lightning delays, James Madison field hockey dropped a 2-1 decision in overtime on Friday night at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.

For JMU (2-3), this was its first home loss since 2021, when #4 Louisville edged the Dukes 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 24, snapping the program's streak of seven consecutive home victories. The Mountaineers rise to 4-1 and face #17 Wake Forest for a noon contest on Sunday.

Senior Tori Carawan scored the lone goal for JMU, her third of the season, to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead early in the third quarter. Classmate Brandelynn Heinbaugh made a pair of saves in the loss.

How It Happened

App State earned one penalty corner in the first half, but the Dukes turned it away to keep it a 0-0 game going into the intermission.
Carawan broke the game open with an unassisted strike a few moments into the second half.
Late in the period, App State's Charlotte Bosma intercepted a pass in the Dukes' defensive end and put one past Heinbaugh to even the game.
JMU managed to draw its only corner of the day in the waning minutes of the third but could not capitalize.
After a defensive battle in the fourth, the game went into overtime. Mountaineer Leah Hurwitz found teammate Kassie Paul for the OT winner just over six minutes into the period.

Game Notes

JMU still leads the all-time series against App State, 20-3-1. However, the Mountaineers have won the last two meetings. The win also marked App State's first against the Dukes in Harrisonburg.
The game was incredibly even, as the teams tallied the same number of shots (8-8), shots on goal (4-4) and penalty corners (1-1).
James Madison has earned one penalty corner in the past two games.
Since 2022, James Madison has lost seven games by one goal, four of which were decided in overtime.
Carawan leads the team in goals with three and is tied for the team lead in points with seven (3g, 1a). Classmate Mia Julian also has seven points, accumulating two goals and three assists.
Through five games, the Dukes have only scored one goal in the first half.
