JMU HOSTS THE HERD
- The James Madison Dukes (16-2, 4-2 SBC) are preparing for the final home game of a four-game stretch as they host the Marshall Thundering Herd for a Sun Belt Conference matchup on Saturday.
- Tip-off at the Atlantic Union Bank Center is set for Saturday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. The game is also the final home game of the month of January for JMU.
- JMU currently holds a 4-2 record in conference play, good for third place in the Sun Belt standings.
- Marshall (9-10, 4-2 SBC) is tied with JMU with their conference records, so this game is crucial for both teams as they continue to jockey for a higher seed heading towards the end of the season.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING VS. MARSHALL
- Historically, the Dukes and Thundering Herd have faced each other six times. Last season, the teams split their matchups, both coming away with road victories.
- The most recent meeting occurred last season on February 22, 2023, with Marshall handing JMU a 92-83 setback in Harrisonburg. Terrence Edwards Jr. led JMU with 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Julien Wooden notched 14 points.
- In the teams' other meeting, JMU defeated the Thundering Herd 72-66 on Dec. 31, 2022, in Huntington. Edwards Jr. and Noah Freidel each scored in double figures to key the Dukes' road victory.
- JMU leads the all-time series 4-2, including a 2-1 record in Huntington.
- The teams will play again on Feb. 22, 2024.
HERD REPORT
- Marshall arrives in Harrisonburg on Saturday following a 91-66 loss at Old Dominion on Thursday.
- Last week, the Herd split a pair of home games, taking down Georgia Southern last Thursday 79-74, but suffered their first conference loss of the season to South Alabama, falling 91-85 to the Jaguars last Saturday.
- Notably, the Herd lost 66-62 to Radford in November. This contrasts to the Dukes' 76-73 over Radford.Â
- Anochili-Killen leads the team in scoring at 17 points per game and is second in rebounding at 6.4 per game.
- Kamdyn Curfman is second in scoring at 13.4 points per game, while leading the team in assists (59) and three-pointers made (52).
- Kevon Voyles is averaging 13.3 points per game and leads the team in steals (33), while Nate Martin averages 10.7 points and a team high 9.4 rebounds per game. Crawford rounds out the double figure scorers averaging 10.1 per contest.
- As a team, Marshall is averaging 76.6 points per game. From the floor, they're hitting .422 and .317 from 3-point range. Their opponents are hitting .434 from the floor and .336 from 3-point range. At the foul line, Marshall is hitting .717. They're outrebounding opponents 40.1 to 36.7.
JMU AS A TEAM
- Julien Wooden had a career night on Thursday, scoring 31 points with seven three-pointers, leading James Madison men's basketball team to an 89-70 victory over ULM in Sun Belt Conference play.
- Despite trailing by 10 (22-12) in the early going, JMU took control of the game with a 28-4 run over eight minutes, securing a 40-28 lead at halftime.
- Wooden's efficient shooting, with a 70.5% field goal percentage and 63.6% from three, played a key role. Terrence Edwards Jr. and Raekwon Horton also contributed with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
- Defensively, JMU limited ULM to four three-pointers and 30 percent from behind the arc. The Dukes dominated in bench points (28-14), assists (23-10), and finished with only five turnovers in the game, which tied a season-low.
- Horton scored 15 points and made 4-of-5 (.800) from behind the arc, the sixth time the junior has scored in double figures this season. Moreover, the four made threes tied his career high.
- The Dukes finished 16-of-39 (.410) from behind the arc. The 16 three-pointers are the second-highest total for JMU this season (17 vs. Kent State, Nov. 9).
