HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Kseniia Kozlova and
Hevynne Bristow finished with double-doubles as James Madison rolled past App State 78-61 in front of 4,080 fans on Saturday afternoon, a record crowd for a women's basketball game inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU (15-6, 7-2 SBC) scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Mountaineers (10-10, 4-5 SBC), with Kozlova responsible for 10 points in the frame.
Kozlova finished with 19 points and led all players with 14 rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Bristow registered 14 points and a career-high 10 boards for her first career-double-double in her first start for the Dukes. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel paced all players with 22 points to go along with seven rebounds, two steals and one block. Sophomore
Chloe Sterling notched a personal-best 11 points in a career-high 29 minutes off the bench.
App State saw three players score in double figures, led by Rylan Moffitt (16), followed by Chaé Harris (13) and Alexis Balck (13). Black finished with a game-best three steals in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- The Dukes opened with a 6-2 run and led 10-8 at the first media timeout, holding App State to 2-of-9 (.222) from the field.
- JMU then completed the frame with a 6-2 spurt for a 16-10 advantage at the break.
- Redshirt junior Steph Ouderkirk scored eight points on 4-of-6 shooting (.667).
Second Quarter
- A second-chance basket by Emily Carver made it 16-14 in the opening minute.
- The Mountaineers trailed 21-18 at the 6:39 mark before McDaniel unloaded back-to-back three-pointers to make it 27-18 and force an App State timeout.
- Later in the period, the Mountaineers went on an 11-0 run in a 3:38 stretch that coincided with five JMU turnovers, cutting the deficit to one, 31-30.
- A late runner from Sterling gave the Dukes a 33-30 edge at the intermission.
Third Quarter
- JMU's advantage grew to 11 (50-39), highlighted by a straight-on triple from Sterling at the 4:21 mark.
- App State chipped away at the deficit, holding the Dukes without a field goal for the final 4:21. JMU went into the fourth ahead 51-46.
- Kozlova registered six points and six rebounds in the quarter.
Fourth Quarter
- App State's Faith Alston knocked down a triple early to make it a four-point game (53-49).
- Bristow responded by scoring seven unanswered points to give the Dukes a 60-49 lead with 5:47 left to play.
- Kozlova scored 10 points, shooting 6-of-10 (.600) from the line in the frame to help JMU coast to the 78-61 victory.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison won its fifth consecutive over App State and now lead 6-1 in the all-time series. The Dukes have won all five meetings played at home.
- JMU held the advantage in points in the paint (40-30) and second-chance points (20-9).
- The Mountaineers finished with nine offensive rebounds after grabbing eight in the first half.
- James Madison won the rebounding battle 53-33, marking the 19th time the team has out-rebounded its opponent in 2023-24.
- The Dukes' 27 points in the fourth quarter is the second-most by the team in that period this season behind a 28-point effort at ULM on Dec. 30.
- Bristow made her first start since Nov. 10, 2021, versus Bucknell as a member of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
- Kozlova's double-double was her fourth of the season and the sixth of her career.
- McDaniel has scored 20-plus points five times this season and 12 times in her career.
- JMU finished 23-of-31 (.741) from the charity stripe, the second-highest total for the Dukes in a game this season after going 26-of-38 (.684) against Old Dominion on Jan. 20.
- The Dukes secured 20 offensive rebounds, the fifth time JMU has corralled 20 offensive boards in a game this season.
