HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison men's basketball shot 62 percent from the field and overpowered Mary Baldwin in a 100-52 victory over the Fighting Squirrels on Tuesday evening inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
Four players for JMU (2-1) reached double figures, led by
Elijah Hutchins-Everett's 21 points in just 18 minutes of action. The native of Orange, N.J., also grabbed 12 rebounds for his first double-double in a JMU uniform.
Xavier Brown scored 17 points and nabbed three steals, while
Mark Freeman dished out seven assists.
Overall, JMU held a commanding 48-25 advantage in rebounding and dominated the paint, holding a 64-24 edge over Mary Baldwin (1-2).
AJ Smith and
Ebenezer Dowuona each grabbed seven rebounds, with Dowuona also reaching 10 points.
Jaden Ignacio and Rony Hogarth led Mary Baldwin with nine points each and a combined five rebounds.
How It Happened
First Half: James Madison 50, Mary Baldwin 28
- The Dukes trailed 7-6 before nine consecutive points, keyed by a dunk from Dowuona, to take an 18-13 lead at the 12:34 mark.
- A pair of layups from Brown and Bryce Lindsay extended the lead to 39-25 with just over three minutes remaining in the period.
- Steals from Justin Taylor and Brown ignited a late first-half rally, punctuated by a layup from Hutchins-Everett to end the half.
- JMU scored a season-high 50 points in the first half, shooting 65.6 percent from the field.
Second Half: James Madison 50, Mary Baldwin 24
- Layups from Dowuona and Noah Williams gave the Dukes a 69-32 lead out of the break.
- The Dukes led by as many as 51 (96-45) with 2:40 remaining in the game and cruised to a victory.
- Multiple players made their season debuts at the end of the game – Matt Hain, Jarrell Pope, Shane Feden, and Aidan Mckeon. Feden and Pope each recorded two points to cap off the JMU victory.
Game Notes
- JMU scored 50 points in both halves, the first time doing that since scoring 52 and 53 points against Coastal Carolina on Feb. 1. That was also the last game the Dukes have reached triple digits.
- The Dukes held a dominating 48-25 edge on the boards, including nine offensive rebounds. Through three contests, JMU owns a rebounding margin of +18.3.
- JMU also outscored Mary Baldwin in bench points (44-22) and points in the paint (64-24).
- The Dukes shot 62 percent from the field tonight, the first time JMU has shot 60 percent or better from the field since the Sun Belt Championship game against Arkansas State on March 11.
- Through three games, Xavier Brown has scored in double figures in all three games and is averaging 17.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per contest.
