HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison baseball junior
Todd Mozoki retired 16 Cornell batters in a row and was aided by a three-run sixth inning to give the Dukes a 5-1 victory Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Dukes have now won five in a row and improved to 6-3, while the Big Red dropped to 1-3.
Graduate
Brendan O'Donnell led the Dukes at the place with a 2-for-4 effort, driving two runs in and recording a double and a home run. Mozoki started on the mound and went notched season-highs of seven innings and five strikeouts, while scattering five hits and just one run.
How It Happened
First Inning
Cornell struck first, using a double and a passed ball to put a runner on third before a single plated the run.
Second Inning
After giving up a walk and a single to start the second, Mozoki was able to induce a double play and then a strikeout. The Big Red would get another baserunner until the seventh inning.
O'Donnell tied the game at one on his fifth home run of the season, hitting it out of the farthest part of the field.
Sixth Inning
The Dukes took the lead in the sixth on a leadoff homer from junior
Jason Schiavone, his second of the season. After a single and a walk put two runners on, junior
Coleman Calabrese singled in a run before O'Donnell followed with a double to give JMU a 4-1 lead.
Eighth Inning
Calabrese extended JMU's lead to four with a sacrifice fly, scoring junior
Fenwick Trimble to make the score 5-1.
Game Notes
- Jason Schiavone's home run was the fifth leadoff home run this season for the Dukes.
- JMU has hit 11 solo homers this season out of 15 total home runs.
- Cornell left seven runners on base to JMU's four.
- Todd Mozoki faced five batters over the minimum across his seven innings.
