NORFOLK, Va. – Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel surpassed 1,000 career points, and James Madison women's basketball held Old Dominion to just 25 percent shooting to earn a 70-58 road win in the regular-season finale on Friday night at Chartway Arena.
With the win, the Dukes (21-10, 13-5 SBC) clinched the No. 3 overall seed and a double bye into the quarterfinals of the 2024 Hercules Tires Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Championship, which takes place March 5-11 in Pensacola, Fla. The Monarchs (21-8, 12-6 SBC) fell to the No. 4 seed with the loss for the Sun Belt Championship.
McDaniel crossed the 1,000-point plateau after a 21-point outing, going 7-of-14 (.500) from the floor and 3-of-7 (.429) from three-point range. Redshirt junior
Annalicia Goodman finished with 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in 27 minutes of action. Senior
Hevynne Bristow added eight points off the bench, while junior
Ashanti Barnes paced all players with 11 rebounds. Redshirt junior
Jamia Hazell registered seven points and seven rebounds.
Two players scored in double figures for ODU, led by Brenda Fontana with 14, followed by Kaye Clark with 12. Jordan McLaughlin had a game-best six assists to go along with five points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter – JMU 25, ODU 15
- JMU held Old Dominion scoreless for 3:21, while Goodman scored back-to-back baskets to give the Dukes an 8-7 lead at the media timeout.
- James Madison continued to stifle the Monarchs as ODU made just two of its last 11 shots from the field to take a 16-13 advantage with under two minutes to play.
- The Dukes closed on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a pull-up jumper from Hazell at the buzzer to make it 25-15 at the break.
- Goodman poured in 10 points in the frame, going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Second Quarter – JMU 38, ODU 30
- McDaniel added five points in the period to help the Dukes hold a nine-point cushion at the media timeout, 33-24.
- The Monarchs closed the first half making just one of their last nine shots from the field, while JMU committed four turnovers in the final 3:11 to lead 38-30 heading into the intermission.
- Through 20 minutes, James Madison shot 50.0 (15-of-30) from the floor compared to ODU's 27.5 percent (11-for-40).
Third Quarter – JMU 57, ODU 39
- An 8-0 run halfway through the period – highlighted by a triple by sophomore Chloe Sterling – as the Dukes' advantage ballooned to 50-35 with 4:19 on the clock.
- Old Dominion recorded a 20.0 percent (4-of-20) clip in the quarter and was outscored 11-0 off the bench.
Fourth Quarter – JMU 70, ODU 58
- Bristow chipped in with a quick four points off the bench as JMU built a 66-46 lead with 4:24 remaining.
- James Madison failed to make a field goal for the final 4:35, while the Monarchs closed on a 7-0 run in the last 0:58.
- McDaniel scored seven points in the fourth and sank 4-of-4 from the line.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison leads Old Dominion in the 2023-24 TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge by a 10.5-2.5 margin. This year's results can be found here.
- JMU held ODU to 25 percent from the floor on 20-of-80 field-goal attempts.
- JMU has defeated ODU in 10 straight meetings but trails 53-30 in the all-time series.
- The Dukes held an edge in points in the paint (30-26), bench points (23-17) and second chance points (18-17).
- James Madison recorded 11 blocks – the most for the program since rejecting 11 shots at Towson on March 3, 2019.
- JMU outworked the Monarchs on the glass, 54-47. The Dukes have won the rebounding battle 27 times this season.
- With 1,014 career points, McDaniel is the 34th Duke to reach the 1,000-point mark. Hazell is the most recent Duke to achieve the feat, hitting the mark against Troy this season on Jan. 13.
- The Dukes led by as much as 24, 63-39, at the 6:49 mark of the fourth quarter.
