CONWAY, S.C. – James Madison baseball evened the series with No. 16 Coastal Carolina, taking down the Chanticleers, 7-4, on Saturday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium to snap the 15-game win streak of CCU.
The Dukes improved to 13-6, 1-1 SBC and have picked up multiple wins against ranked opponents for the first time in the same season since at least 2007, according to available records. JMU defeated then-No. 3 Arkansas on Feb. 18. The Chanticleers dropped to 16-3, 1-1 SBC, as the nation's third longest active win streak was ended.
JMU was led at the plate by junior
Fenwick Trimble (3-for-4, one RBI, one walk) and sophomore
Mike Mancini (3-for-5, one run scored, one RBI). Redshirt senior
Hunter Entsminger (2-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief, striking out two and not allowing a run. Senior
Joe Vogatsky picked up his third save of the season as he shut the door with three innings of work and a season-high tying four strikeouts.
How It Happened
Second Inning
The Dukes loaded the bases with a walk, a fielding error and a single four batters into the inning. Junior
Jason Schiavone then took the 2-1 pitch the other way, knocking in two runs for a 2-0 lead with a single.
Fourth Inning
A two-run single tied the game for Coastal.
Fifth Inning
Each team scored a run in the fifth as the game seemed to go back-and-forth. A
Ryan Dooley single followed by a double from redshirt senior
Mason Dunaway set up junior
Coleman Calabrese to plate Dooley on an infield single to give JMU a 3-2 lead.
CCU tied the game two batters into the bottom half of the inning on a Derek Bender home run.
Sixth Inning
Clutch hitting by Trimble gave JMU a lead it wouldn't give up, as with two outs and two on, Trimble singled to right field for a 3-2 lead.
Eighth Inning
Schiavone led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a bunt single from sophomore
Wyatt Peifer. Mancini stepped up next and delivered a single to left field to score Schiavone, but an error allowed both Peifer and Mancini to advance into scoring position. Dunaway increased the lead to 7-3 on a two-run single with the bases loaded three batters later.
The Chants took a run back to make it 7-4 on a single up the middle.
