HARRISONBURG, Va. –
Maria Atwood, a sophomore on the James Madison women's golf team, was named Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Week, the conference announced Thursday afternoon. Â
Â
The Holly Springs, N.C. native led the field at the River Landing Classic this week to earn her first individual title and guided the Dukes to a first-place finish. The title marked the first collegiate of her career and the first team title for JMU since the Dukes took the ECU Ironwood Invitational on April 4, 2023.
Â
Atwood kicked off the tournament with a three-under 69, the best round by any of the 74 golfers in the field. She finished with a three-round score of 215 (-1), carding 11 birdies in three rounds.Â
Â
Atwood joins teammateÂ
Kendall Turner on the list of JMU golfers who have earned the award this season. Turner earned the accolade twice in Weeks 2 & 4 of the fall semester.
Â
Atwood and the Dukes return to action at the Spring Break Shootout at the Lake Jovita Golf Course in Dade City, Fla., on March 18-19.Â
