HARRISONBURG, Va. – Mired by a one-hour weather delay with rain sprinkled in during innings, James Madison baseball found a way to power past Georgetown in a slugfest, 13-12, on Tuesday night at Veterans Memorial Park.
Â
The Dukes improved to 26-18 on the year and finished 6-2 in home midweek games during the season. The Hoyas had their three-game win streak snapped and fell to 29-14.
Â
Junior
Jason Schiavone tied career-highs in hits and RBI's as he went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, two runs scored and four RBI's while also drawing a walk. It is the catcher's second career multi-homer game and puts him at 15 home runs in 2024. Sophomore
Max Kuhle pitched a scoreless inning of relief to even his record at 4-4, while senior
Joe Vogatsky picked up his seventh save of the year with an inning of work and three strikeouts.
Â
How It Happened
First Inning
Sophomore
Mike Mancini and Schiavone went back-to-back to give JMU a 2-0 lead after an inning of play.
Â
Second Inning
JMU increased its lead to four on a two-run jack from graduate
Brendan O'Donnell, his 13
th home run of the season. Two more runs came in to make it 6-0 when the Hoyas tried to turn a double play with bases loaded, allowing a run to score off the forceout at second but another to trot home on a high throw at first base.
Â
Third Inning
Georgetown took four runs back on a two-run homer from Jake Hyde and then a pair of doubles that scored a run each to make it 6-4.
Â
A double steal with O'Donnell and sophomore
Wyatt Peifer followed by a single from sophomore
Jack Guerrero pushed the lead back to four for the Dukes at 8-4.
Â
Fourth Inning
Five runs were pushed across home plate by the Hoyas, with Blake Schaaf leading off with a long ball. GU took a 9-8 lead on a Joe Hollarbach grand slam five batters later.
Â
The lead was short-lived though, as Peifer laid down a squeeze bunt with bases loaded to score a run but another throwing error by Georgetown allowed a second run to score and JMU to take a 10-9 lead.
Â
Fifth Inning
Two wild pitches were used by the Hoyas to first tie the game and then take an 11-10 lead.
Â
With rain coming down, Schiavone gave the lead back to the Dukes for good with his second home run of the season. The two-run shot put JMU out front 12-11.
Â
Sixth Inning
Georgetown managed to get two runners on with two outs, but as Joe Stella singled to tie the base, lightning struck and delayed the game for an hour. Freshman
Jackson Logar took over on the mound after the delay and induced a groundout to get out of the jam.
Â
Seventh Inning
Mancini drew a two-out walk and then stole his 23
rd base of the season before Schiavone would double him in to push the lead to 13-11.
Â
Ninth Inning
Down to their final strike, the Hoyas managed to single in a run to bring the game within one at 13-12 and put the tying run on second. Vogatsky would pick up the strikeout to end the game though and preserve the win.
