PINEHURST, N.C. – Former James Madison golfer Neal Shipley continued his historic 2024 season Sunday evening, becoming just the seventh golfer to win low amateur at The Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year at the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
Â
Shipley, a 2022 graduate of JMU, joins Ken Venturi (1956), Jack Nicklaus (1960), Phil Mickelson (1991), Matt Kuchar (1998), and Viktor Hovland (2019) as golfers to win low amateur at The Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. He finished tied for 26th at 6-over-par.
Â
In Sunday's final round, Shipley was paired with fellow amateur Luke Clanton (Florida State), just the second time in over 40 years that two amateurs played together on a U.S. Open Sunday.
Â
Shipley will now embark on his career in the PGA Tour Americas at The Beachlands Victoria Open in Victoria, British Columbia June 20-23.Â
