NEW YORK – For the first time since March 2, 2020, James Madison women's basketball is receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, as announced on Monday afternoon.
The Dukes earned two votes, placing them in a tie with Vanderbilt for 34th overall in the poll. Prior to the national attention the team received in 2020, the last time JMU received votes in the AP poll was on March 7, 2016, when the Dukes picked up eight votes heading into the CAA Tournament. Additionally, James Madison last cracked the top 25 in the AP poll on Feb. 16, 2015, when it checked in at No. 23.
JMU boasts a 23-4 record with a perfect 14-0 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, and has won 15 consecutive games dating back to Dec. 29 – the program's longest winning streak under the direction of Head Coach
Sean O'Regan. Three of the Dukes' four losses are currently ranked in the top 15: No. 1 Notre Dame (92-46, Nov. 13), No. 2 Texas (93-62, Dec. 8) and No. 13 NC State (61-47, Dec. 19).
The Dukes are off to a 14-0 start in league play for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign as members of the Colonial Athletic Association and are the first Sun Belt team to begin 14-0 against conference foes since Arkansas State started the 2015-16 season 18-0.
JMU owns four top-20 marks nationally: three-point percentage defense (4th – 25.0), defensive rebounds per game (6th – 30.3), rebounds per game (10th – 42.78) and field goal percentage defense (16th – 36.0).
Up next, the Dukes head to Atlanta to take on Georgia State on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Action inside the GSU Convocation Center is set for 6:30 p.m. and will stream on ESPN+.
