While June was an historic month in the world of collegiate athletics as the House vs. NCAA settlement was approved, notably ushering in an era of roster limits and revenue sharing with student-athletes, the department's financial model is changing as greater financial opportunities for our student-athletes can be provided. The number of scholarships we are permitted and able to offer incoming Dukes will increase, and we are also allowed to provide financial benefits directly to our student-athletes.
JMU Athletics has prepared for this significant moment for a year and is confident in its plan and position. We will fully embrace and are adapting to this era as it positively impacts our most important asset and one of our most important core values: our student-athletes and their experience. We desire to create memorable experiences and championship-level resources across our 18-sport, broad-based program.
Following the settlement on June 6, we released a three-part series detailing what this change is going to mean for JMU and laying out the specifics of how JMU Nation can be even more supportive in this new era. If you haven't had a chance to catch up on the series, I encourage you to do so below:
As has happened many times before at JMU, we have a new challenge and opportunity ahead of us, and we all know that success cannot be achieved alone. We are grateful for the University valuing Athletics and for their assistance and support as we navigate these changes. We are also thankful to so many donors, alumni, and fans who are generous and committed. As we modernize, there are impactful ways you can support the Dukes in this new era; the Duke Club Proud and True Annual Fund and the newly-established Student-Athlete Enhancement Fund will both be critical ingredients to sustained success moving forward.
This is a transformative period, and we will continue to strive to be the best in class and best position ourselves for what is next. JMU is an incredible place made up of incredible people, and I believe together that we can meet the moment and prove successful as we embark on this new journey.
