LINCOLN, Neb. – James Madison produced a pair of singles wins, but a doubles sweep and a trio of straight-set singles wins by Nebraska paved the way for a 5-2 Huskers win over the Dukes on Friday night at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Nebraska (1-0) nabbed the early 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles play, aided by a strong showing on court three and winning key points on courts one and two. Nebraska won the doubles bouts over JMU (0-1) by scores of 6-1 on court three, 6-4 on court one and 7-5 and court two.
In singles play, the Cornhuskers doubled their lead to 2-0 on court three, as Katie Spencer downed
Sophie Williams, 6-2, 6-0. A back-and-forth bout on court two went Nebraska's way, as Emma Rizzetto surged past
Mia Saveljic late in both sets to win, 6-4, 6-4, stretching the advantage to 3-0.
JMU got on the board on court five, as
Brooklyn Hoffmann produced her first career dual-match triumph in straight sets. She overcame a late push from Catherine Gagnon in a 6-1, 7-5 win.
The Huskers clinched the match on court four, where Tiziana Rossini fended off
Anna Kantor by scores of 7-5, 6-4.
Over on court one,
Daria Munteanu picked up a big win, battling past Maria Taranova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Moments later, Reya Lee Coe downed
Ariel Avidan, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.
It's a quick turnaround for JMU, which returns to the same court on Saturday, Jan. 17 against Omaha in a neutral-site matchup. The opening serve is set for 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT).
