LINCOLN, Neb. – James Madison rounded out its opening weekend with a dominant 6-1 victory against Omaha in a neutral-site women's tennis bout at Nebraska's Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
The Dukes (1-1) won two of three doubles matches, which included the clinching the point in tiebreak fashion while winning four of six singles courts in straight sets. The final two points would be decided in third-set super tiebreakers, with JMU and Omaha (0-1) splitting those results.
Brooklyn Hoffmann and
Mia Saveljic went 2-0 on the afternoon, while the Dukes also produced singles wins from
Anna Kantor,
Ariel Avidan and
Corinna Rietmann.
Teams traded 6-2 doubles wins on courts one and three, as the team of Hoffmann and Sophie Willams downed Katelynn Kock and Nina Wiese at the top doubles spot. The point would be decided on court two in a tiebreak, as the tandem of
Reka Matko and Saveljic slid past Omaha's Corinne Barber and Jacqueline Pearsall.
JMU took control early in singles play, claiming opening sets on four of six courts. The Dukes doubled their lead on court six, as Rietmann cruised past Summer Shannon, 6-1, 6-1. Shortly after, the Dukes took a 3-0 lead when Hoffmann rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Kock on court three.
Avidan clinched the match and her first career singles victory on court five, as she took a 6-4, 6-2 decision from Shelby Smith. The lead grew to 5-0 on court one when Saveljic earned her first triumph at the top singles spot with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Wiese.
Kantor capped off JMU's scoring with a comeback win on court four, overcoming a match point in a super tiebreaker to win 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) against Pearsall. Omaha claimed their lone singles court on court two, where Khayli Buckels held off Williams by scores of 6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-0 (10-7).
JMU returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 25 with a trip to New Jersey to take on Princeton at noon.
