FAQ
What happens when a student athlete is injured while participating with their assigned sport?
Our sports medicine team on campus includes Athletic Trainers, Team Physicians and Physician Assistant. These individuals are the gate keepers for every student athlete and will determine the appropriate care. There are no fees for any services provided in the Athletic Training Room and Medical Clinic.  Â
Â
What about services ordered for sport related illness or injuries:
When participating in your assigned sports and are injured during practice, workouts or games with your assigned sport and must use outside medical services (such as getting an MRI at the local hospital), the Medical Provider will file claims with your primary insurance first. Once your primary processes, then the Medical Provider will submit claims to the current athletic insurance company (A-G Administrators) which is a secondary coverage. If there is a balance remaining after A-G Administrators, then the final bill will be paid by the JMU Athletic Department. There should be no costs to the family of any student athlete injured while participating with their assigned athletic activity. If you would receive any bills, forward them to the Athletic Trainer or email them to the Insurance Coordinator at
fraziesd@jmu.edu or fax them to 540-568-3902. Â
Â
What if I want to get a second opinion?
This goes back to the gatekeepers. The Sports Medicine staff is not opposed to second opinions and in most cases we agree. All second opinions must be pre-approved by the Athletic Trainer, Team Physician and Director of Sports Medicine. This is for a couple of reasons: since our staff is the primary care giver, we need to coordinate the care of our student athletes. Our team physicians and Director of Sports Medicine have final say in all medical decisions for the student athletes at JMU. Secondly, we do not want you to have to pay anything out of pocket and if you make the decision to get a second opinion on your own then the medical claims will become your responsibility and the athletic insurance and JMU Athletics/Sports Medicine will not cover.  Â
Â
What happens when there are services ordered for non-sport illnesses or injuries, like an MRI or Ultrasound?
You are not charged when being seen by the Team Physician for non-sport issues. However, if you are sent to an outside Provider (such as the hospital, or a specialty provider) their office will bill your personal insurance for these services. Any balance that remains after your insurance has paid will be your (or parent/guardians) responsibility.Â
You will be required to sign a Financial Waiver for all non-athletic issues that require outside medical services stating that you understand that JMU is NOT responsible for these services.  Â
Â
I wear contacts, do you pay for these?
JMU Athletics encourages everyone to have a yearly eye exam, we do NOT pay for the evaluation. However, if you have a current prescription, we can pay for a 6-month supply of contacts or sports goggles.
We do NOT pay for glasses. Please speak with your athletic trainer if you have additional questions.Â
Why should I have health insurance if I am a student-athlete?Â
James Madison University encourages all student athletes to have health insurance to help with expenses that might arise from illnesses or injuries that are not athletics related. JMU does provide insurance coverage at no charge for athletic injuries/illnesses, however this is considered a secondary coverage (after primary insurance). JMU will
NOT cover any non- sport related illness or injuries
(pre-existing-before JMU injuries, colds, diabetes, asthma, vision, routine dental care, club, or pick-up sports, etc.) or any injuries sustained outside of the NCAA sanctioned/approved training and practice times.Â
What if my insurance changes during the year?
You are asked to update your information at the beginning of each year. If your insurance changes during the academic year, contact your Athletic Trainer or the Insurance Coordinator for Athletics at 540-568-6966.Â
Why do you need a copy of my insurance card?
There is information on there that is needed by medical providers and the pharmacy that helps to process claims. This is information other than the policy number.Â
Â
What if I am not covered by any personal insurance?Â
There are several options. The university has an agreement with McGriff Services, a local insurance broker who partners with American Exchange who is available and qualified to provide insurance direction for JMU students and their parents/guardians. Call the American Exchange at 888-995-1674 to speak with one of their licensed agents. Identify yourself as a JMU student (or parent/guardian of a JMU student) who needs assistance with determining best options for coverage.Â
Â
I am an international student, what should I do?
The University requires you to have insurance. The Travel insurance that you may purchase will most likely only cover you during travel and for emergency hospital visits. Please contact the JMU International Student and Scholar Services to discuss what health insurance plan that the University offers by calling 540-568-5209 or by email at
isss@jmu.eduÂ
Â
Why do you need the date of birth and social security number of a student-athlete and the insurance policyholder?
Most medical providers and insurance companies still use these items to identify policyholders and patients. Your insurance information will be placed on our secure server and is treated as medical information. If you are not comfortable with releasing your entire social security number, the last four digits will be sufficient.Â
Â
How long will the student athlete have insurance coverage for an injury?   Â
- The Athletic insurance secondary policy will cover the costs for two years from the date of injury.Â
- JMU Athletics will cover up to two years after graduation or after the student athlete has been removed from the team roster if they have been compliant with treatments. During this two-year period, all ongoing medical services must meet compliance guidelines and be pre-approved by the Athletic Trainer, Director of Sports Medicine and/or Team Physician. Â
- If a student athlete quits, is removed from their team, registers through the transfer portal. transfers to another school, is discharged for non-compliant or other reasons, JMU Athletics has the right to deny any ongoing or future medical claims starting at the transfer or exit date from JMU or the team.Â
- The NCAA provides life-long coverage for what are considered Catastrophic Injuries.Â
There are certain qualifiers that must be met to get this coverage. The Athletic Department will monitor each injury to help achieve the best coverage possible.Â
