Mission Statement
The JMU strength and conditioning office is dedicated to the total development of the student-athlete's athletic performance potential. We work with our student-athletes and coaches by providing programs based on scientifically-based principles, well-designed and collaborative processes and proven training strategies. Our focus is on creating a training atmosphere that allows for hard work and adequate recovery with the intention of optimizing the performance potential and reducing the risk of injury for each student-athlete. In all our endeavors we are committed to the core values of integrity, collaboration, innovation, humility and commitment to excellence in our pursuit of student-athlete well-being and performance development:
Guiding Principles
1. Performance Driven
Our aim is to have a direct correlation between percentage increases in the human performance characteristics and performance on the field of play. Training should be centered on development of bio-motor strength, power and energy systems that contribute to skill expression specific to the sport.
2. Disciplined T.E.A.M Approach
Through our passionate and disciplined approach and working with the "Together Everyone Achieves More" mentality we will facilitate an environment of respect centered on success. Driven by accountability, responsibility and discipline, our teams will achieve success and make winning championships a standard and expectation.
3. Science-Based, Practically Applied Training, and Periodization
Our training and programming will be backed by scientific methods and able to be applied practically during every training session. It will follow a systematic periodization process aimed at developing specific performance qualities at key times of the year.
4. Holistic, Integrated Approach and Process
As part of the overall integrated health and sports performance unit, we will be integrated with other areas of the athletic department including sports medicine, sports nutrition, sport psychology and academics to drive performance from a more holistic approach. All components will work together to create and maintain momentum with a focus on sustainable success.
5. Focused and Relentless Effort
We will expect nothing less that the best and the most out of every student-athlete that trains with us every single session, every single day, in season or off season.
6. Mentor/Coach Mentality
As a mentor coach we have the privilege and opportunity to help develop the student-athlete physically, mentally and personally. It is our responsibility to set the standard for personal accountability and leading by example in our training and conduct.
7. Resilient Body and Minds
Our training methods will build both bodies resilient to injuries and minds resilient to withstand and endure the stressors of high levels of competition. A durable, resilient and more robust athlete will equate to reduced risk of injury and more availability which equates to more effective skill and team development. Skill and team development equates to better performance outcomes.
