James Madison Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne on Thursday, April 27, 2017 announced the hiring of Justin Jannuzzi to serve as the department’s senior associate athletics director for development after most recently working as senior director of major gifts at Duke.
“Justin will bring a wealth of enthusiasm and experience to lead our development efforts at JMU while also filling a key chair amid our senior leadership team,” Bourne said. “He has been a fast riser in the development ranks with vast experience in the Mid-Atlantic area, a territory that covers much of our key constituent footprint. He will be the perfect person to build upon the strengths of our current Duke Club operation and elevate our profile.”
In his new role, Jannuzzi will direct overall operations of the JMU Duke Club, including major gift fundraising, annual fund development, special event operations, letterwinner giving, young donor (DC25) growth and more.
“The Duke Club has a strong foundation and rich tradition that I am eager to build upon,” Jannuzzi said. “My style begins with a passionate commitment to elevating our student-athletes’ experience. I'm looking forward to meeting our supporters and working together to take JMU Athletics to greater heights. Thank you to everyone who was involved in this process, especially Jeff Bourne, Charlie King, Geoff Polglase and Todd Turner. I'm honored and humbled that they believe in me to lead JMU’s athletic fundraising efforts.”
Most recently at Duke since 2013, Jannuzzi concentrated on major gift fundraising to support the department’s overall operating budget, facility upgrades, endowments and the Duke Forward Campaign. His significant fundraising projects included multiple facility renovations for the football program. He also served as Duke’s fundraising liaison for the baseball and softball programs.
Prior to Duke, Jannuzzi worked as director of the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation at ODU from 2010 to 2013. Among his key responsibilities, he oversaw a 73 percent growth in giving and 25 percent growth in membership for the department’s annual fund.
Jannuzzi’s rapid growth in college athletics began as an intern for the Wolfpack Club at N.C. State followed by stints as assistant director of ticketing and donor relations at VCU and a promotion to Director of the Ram Athletic Fund at VCU.
“Duke University has been exceptionally good to my family. We have made lifelong friends and memories there that we cherish dearly. However, my wife, a proud JMU alum, and I are beyond excited to return to our home state of Virginia and start this next chapter with the JMU community.”
A 2005 graduate of Wabash College in Indiana, Jannuzzi was a four-year football student-athlete with two years for the Little Giants at the Division III level, which followed a transfer from two years at Division III Hampden-Sydney. He received his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Wabash with a minor in history and went on to achieve his Master of Science from the VCU Center for Sport Leadership, where he had internship experiences in coaching, ticketing and marketing.
Both Jannuzzi and his wife, the former Jessica Oglesby (JMU '06), are Richmond, Va. natives. They have two daughters, Josephine and Jocelyn.
