James Madison Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced the hiring of Troy Allen on Tuesday, July 7 as the head coach of the department’s cheerleading program and spirit squads.
Allen, who holds nearly 20 years of experience in the cheerleading industry, comes to James Madison after spending the 2025-26 season as the head coach of the University of Connecticut spirit program.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Troy Allen as the new James Madison cheerleading head coach,” Roan said. “Troy holds a variety of experience at different levels with coaching stints at UConn, Long Island and Ole Miss. His experience coaching student-athletes at the highest level of college football and college basketball will be a great fit as JMU continues to elevate all aspects of the intercollegiate athletic experience. We look forward to his impact on our game day environment as well as his proven track record of winning national championships in competitive cheer."

We are thrilled to welcome him to JMU and believe he is the right person to guide our spirit program into its next chapter."
Allen previously spent two seasons as the head coach of the Coordinator of Spirit Groups at Long Island University from 2023-25, leading the program to consecutive national championships. He spent nearly two years at Ole Miss, serving as the spirit program’s head coach in the 2021-22 after serving as a volunteer assistant the year prior. During his tenure at Ole Miss, Allen led the Ole Miss All Girl team to a Division IA All-Girl Gameday national championship in 2022.
A 2013 graduate of Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo., Allen earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management. Allen also served as a University Relations Account Manager at Varsity Spirit in Memphis from 2017-22, working as a key liaison between Varsity Spirit and athletic departments nationwide.
