Neil Macmillan joined the James Madison field hockey staff as technical director in January 2018.
In his first season, Macmillan helped the Dukes make their fifth straight CAA Tournament appearance as the No. 4 seed.
Macmillan previously spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Ohio University.
“I’m very excited to bring someone in with such a high level of expertise and experience,” Morgan said. “We had a top-notch pool of candidates, and ultimately felt Neil had the specifics we were looking for to enhance the program.”
During his time as head coach, Macmillan recorded 131 wins with the Bobcats, setting a school record. He led Ohio to four MAC regular season championships (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011), four MAC tournament championships (‘06, ‘07, ‘09, ‘11) and four NCAA tournament appearances (’06, ’07, ’09, ’11). He was named the MAC Coach of the Year three times (’06, ’09, ’11) as well as the NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year in 2007.
“I am extremely grateful to Christy for giving me the opportunity to work at James Madison,” Macmillan expressed. “I have known Coach Morgan since 1999 and worked with her at various camps throughout the years. She has also served as a mentor throughout my coaching career. The passion and energy she brings when she coaches is unmatched, and I am excited to work with her in an everyday setting.”
While coaching the Bobcats, Macmillan guided 23 student-athletes to MAC All-Tournament honors, 20 to First Team All-MAC accolades and six to major MAC awards in addition to one NFHCA All-American and 16 All-West Region honorees. Academically, 110 Bobcats were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Prior to his time as a head coach, Macmillan spent seven years as the associate head coach at Wake Forest. He won three national championships with the Demon Deacons and appeared in two additional NCAA Final Fours. During his stint in Winston-Salem, Wake Forest amassed 114 victories with three ACC regular-season titles and two ACC tournament championships.
“Neil comes to us with an excitement and energy to focus on specific roles to support the needs of our program,” Morgan added. “He is a master of game analysis, loves the studying the game and has a passion for sharing his knowledge. We are fortunate to have him as a part of our staff.”
Macmillan graduated from Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England in 1996 with a degree in engineering, focused on structures and materials, geotechnical engineering and surveying. A goalkeeper at Loughborough, he won the British Universities Sports Association championship in 1991 and finished runner-up in 1992. He also competed in the English National League with Havant Hockey Club (1988-1991) and Beeston Hockey Club (1992-1994).
