Brandon Staley is in his second year as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the James Madison football program.
Staley spent the 2013 season as the defensive coordinator at John Carroll University, where he helped lead the Blue Streaks to a 9-2 overall record, 8-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play and a berth in the Division III national playoffs for the first time since 2002. His defense averaged giving up just 9.1 points and 228.4 yards per game, while forcing 27 turnovers, earning him OAC Co-Assistant Coach of the Year. Senior cornerback Randy Greenwood was named a Second Team All-America selection, while five defensive players earned All-OAC honors. His defense ranked third nationally in third-down defense, second in red-zone defense, third in pass efficiency defense and 16th in defensive yards per rush..
Prior to his time at John Carroll, Staley worked one year at Tennessee, serving as defensive graduate assistant in charge of inside linebackers as well as special teams assistant. During his season, he coached AJ Johnson, who led the Southeastern Conference and ranked fourth in the NCAA in tackles with 138, the most since Jerod Mayo in 2007. Staley also coached Herman Lathers who was selected for the NFLPA All Star Game in California.
He also spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons at Hutchinson (KS) Community College as the associate head coach and was the defensive coordinator. Additionally, Staley held duties of linebackers coach and special teams assistant. The team won two Salt Bowl championships as Hutchinson went 10-2 and finished the season ranked No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 2011, and 9-3 and ranked No. 9 in 2011. He also coached nine players that signed Division I scholarship offers on defense and special teams, including Cordarrelle Patterson, the eventual first-round NFL draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings.
In 2009, Staley was at the University of St. Thomas, a Division III powerhouse in Minnesota. The team went 11-2 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals as he served the program as its defensive line and assistant special teams coach.
Staley landed his first coaching job at Northern Illinois. From 2006-08, he was part of two postseason bowls (2006 Poinsettia vs. TCU, 2008 Independence vs. Louisiana Tech). He was a defensive graduate assistant working with the secondary (2006-07) and linebackers (2008) and special teams (all three years). In 2008, NIU's defense led the Mid-American Conference and was ranked among the top 20 nationally in scoring defense, pass defense and total defense.
Staley was a three-year letterwinner at quarterback for the Dayton, serving as captain the Flyers in his senior season of 2004. He posted a 16-5 career record in two seasons as a starter, including a 9-2 mark his junior year when Dayton was ranked fifth in the country by Football Gazette. That publication also named Staley to its preseason All-America second team entering the 2004 campaign. His senior season, UD again achieved a No. 5 ranking en route to a 7-3 record. He completed his fifth year at Mercyhurst with his twin brother Jason, where the duo was coached by current Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi, the grandson of Vince Lombardi.
As the Flyers' starting QB, Staley completed 168 of 293 passes for 2,609 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushed for 639 yards and 11 scores. As a junior, he compiled 1,961 yards of total offense, the fourth-highest single season mark in school history. His total included 1,617 passing and 344 rushing yards; he added eight rushing TDs while completing 100-of-169 passes. His senior season, Staley completed 68-of-124 throws for 992 yards and six TDs and ran for 295 yards on 84 carries. He was a four-time member of the Pioneer Football League All-Academic list. He graduated from Dayton in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in political science.
A two-sport high school standout, Staley played football and basketball at Perry High School. As a senior, he quarterbacked Perry to a conference title and a quarterfinal round appearance in the Ohio state playoffs. The accolades rolled in as he was First Team News-Herald, First Team Plain Dealer, First Team All-District and Honorable Mention All-Ohio as well as Lake County Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year.
Staley and his wife Amy reside in Harrisonburg.
