Former JMU standout Jennifer Brown joined the Dukes' staff as assistant coach in June 2010. She completed her sixth season on the coaching staff in 2015-16.
As a sixth-year coach, she helped guide freshman center Kayla Cooper-Williams to CAA Rookie of the Year honors, who set the single-season blocks record during the league championship game. JMU also posted the second-highest rebounds per game mark in the nation (46.44) headed into the NCAA Tournament.
During the 2014-15 season, JMU women’s basketball became just the third program in NCAA history to reach the 1,000-win mark when the Dukes downed UNCW 74-57 on Jan. 6. The Dukes won the CAA title for a second consecutive season and appeared as the No. 12 seed in the Chapel Hill Regional in the NCAA tournament. Brown also coached Lauren Okafor to her best collegiate season as a post player, getting drafted by the Atlanta Dream in the third round of the 2015 WNBA Draft, the 34th overall pick.
Her fourth season (2013-14) with the Dukes was one of the most successful in program history as JMU tied a school record 29 wins and advanced to the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. The CAA champion Dukes won their first NCAA tournament game since 1991 with a 72-63 victory over No. 6 Gonzaga in the round of 64.
In her first season (2010-11) as a coach at JMU, the Dukes won the Colonial Athletic Association championship and played in the NCAA Tournament. In her second season (2011-12) JMU advanced to the championship game of the Women's National Invitation Tournament, and in her third (2012-13) the Dukes were WNIT quarterfinalists.
Brown played for the Dukes from 2006-08 after transferring to JMU from Pittsburgh. In her junior season in 2006-07, JMU compiled a 27-6 record, was runner-up in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and was ranked as high as 22nd in the Associated Press Top 25 poll and as high as 25th in the USA Today Top 25 poll. As a senior in 2007-08, Brown was a starting forward on the Dukes' team that put together a 24-10 record, advanced to the round of 16 of the Women's National Invitation Tournament, and received votes during the season in both Top 25 polls.
Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in justice studies with a concentration in criminal justice from JMU in 2007 and a master’s degree in kinesiology with a concentration in coaching and recreation leadership from JMU in 2008. She is also a 2013 graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy and attended the ACA Forum in 2015.
