James Madison Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine Tom Kuster announced the hiring of Mike Basgier as head basketball strength and conditioning Coach on Thursday.
“I’m thrilled to welcome Mike Basgier back home to JMU as our head basketball strength and conditioning coach,” Kuster said. “As an alum, Mike bleeds purple and is deeply committed to the success of our sport programs. I’m confident that he will do a tremendous job training the student-athletes competing in our men’s and women’s basketball and field hockey programs. His energy, enthusiasm and breadth of experience will have an immediate and positive impact on the preparation of our student-athletes and his philosophy is certainly aligned with ours as we continue to build our integrated sports performance model at JMU.”
Most recently, Basgier served as the head strength and conditioning coach for basketball and tennis at Illinois for three years. Prior to Illinois, he held assistant strength and conditioning coach positions at Indiana and Ohio. In three years with the Bobcats, he implemented strength and conditioning programs for basketball, volleyball and soccer. At Indiana, he assisted football and men’s basketball while also directing baseball, swimming and diving, water polo and field hockey.
Other experience for Basgier also included one year with Velocity Sports Performance near Washington, D.C. and one year with the Akron Aeros (now Rubberducks), a Double-A Minor League Baseball club in Ohio. He also completed his graduate assistant experience at Auburn, working with track and field, cross country and men’s golf.
“Every JMU alum I know talks about how deeply special a place this really is,” Basgier said. “The city, the university, and above all else, the people make this one of the most elite institutions in America. The opportunity to return to Madison to coach these three great programs, and to raise my family in the region, is the highest professional privilege I have had.”
Basgier holds certification with the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
During his time at JMU, Basgier was an undergraduate intern strength and conditioning coach, assisting multiple of Dukes teams with strength and conditioning programs. He was also a competitor with USA Powerlifting during his time in Harrisonburg and achieved a top-10 finish at the 1999 Collegiate National Championships.
Basgier graduated from JMU in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise leadership and a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication. He earned his Master of Science in exercise physiology in 2003 from Auburn University. He resides in Harrisonburg with his wife, Erin, and sons, Griffin and Callan.
