HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 20, 2006 - Freshman Meghan Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) received a breakaway pass with 7:18 remaining in overtime for the game-winning goal as 16th-ranked James Madison University recorded a 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Drexel University on Friday at the JMU Field Hockey Complex.
JMU (11-6, 4-1 CAA) held possession on its half for much of the match and held an 18-3 edge in shots during regulation. The Dukes saw several missed opportunities in the first half when they led in shots 10-1 and penalty corners 5-1. Drexel (6-10, 0-6 CAA) managed to hold JMU at bay thanks to five first-half saves from sophomore goalkeeper Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom).
Drexel continued to play strong defense in the second half and saw a few more offensive opportunities with four corners. The best opportunity for the Dragons came on a penalty corner 12 minutes into the half when freshman Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) tried to score overtop JMU freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland), who was sprawled out on the ground. However, JMU sophomore Lauren Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) managed to get her stick up for the defensive save.
JMU had several scoring chances knocked away, including an opportunity with 10 minutes remaining when sophomore Melissa Stefaniak (Plymouth, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) received a pass from the right end line. She found herself open in the circle, but her shot was knocked away for McAndrew's seventh save.
The match went into sudden-victory overtime where the Dukes received a corner four minutes into the period but had a shot by sophomore Melissa Walls (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) saved by McAndrew. Drexel managed to get down the field immediately and had several chances with three consecutive corner plays. The Dragons managed to get one shot off but it was saved by JMU freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland).
JMU escaped and instantly drove down the field off the corner. Stefaniak received the ball at midfield on the breakaway and drove into the circle for a two-on-one against the keeper. She fed the ball to her left to Bain, who struck it home for the game winner. It was Bain's team-leading 12th goal of the season and conference-leading sixth game-winning goal.
Cutchins had two saves for her first solo shutout of the season and the Dukes' seventh as a team. McAndrew finished with nine saves. JMU finished with a 20-4 advantage in shots and led in penalty corners 10-8.
JMU will play its final home match of the season when it hosts the University of Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m.
