WOMEN'S TENNIS COMPETES IN VIRGINIA TECH INVITATIONAL
BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 9, 2006 The JMU women's tennis team competed in the Virginia Tech Invitational from Oct. 6-8 in Blacksburg, Va. Nine players competed for the Dukes in singles and doubles competition. Sophomore Anna Khoor (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease), senior Mary Napier (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee), and freshman Rebecca Erickson (Hilton Head, S.C./Heritage Academy) all competed in flight A singles competition. Erickson went 1-1 in her matches losing to Thaddea Lock of Marshall 6-0, 6-3 before defeating Yulia Kashelkina of Marshall 7-6 (4), 6-3. Freshman Briana Jain (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) competed for JMU in flight B singles competition. Jain lost her first match to Jessica Brouwer of Virginia Tech 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 and then went on to defeat Ashton Downs of Radford 9-7.She then fell to Cassandra Price of Radford 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (8). Two Dukes competed in flight C singles competition. Freshman Kirra Summers (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) went 2-1 in her singles flight C matches falling to Ginny Wortham of Washington & Lee 6-2, 6-2 before defeating both Antonietta Iosue and Neely Edwards of Radford 6-0, 6-1. Senior Lauren Graham (Richmond, Va./Carroll) also went 2-1 winning her initial flight C match with Brittany Stewart of East Tennessee State 6-4, 6-4 then falling to Kelly Will of Washington & Lee 6-1, 6-2. Graham then defeated Katie Miglin of Marshall 7-5, 6-4. Sophomores Barrett Donnor (Durham, N.C./Jordan) and Annie Day (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) also competed in singles competition in flight D. In doubles competition the teams of Erickson and Jain along with Khoor and Napier competed in flight A while the teams of Graham and Summers in addition to Donner and freshman Kelly Maxwell (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) competed in flight B.
