HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 25, 2006 – James Madison scored 16 runs after the fifth inning to rout Fairfield 18-3 in non-conference college baseball Saturday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
The Dukes have won the first two of this three-game series to improve to 2-4, while Fairfield slipped to 0-2.
Senior second baseman Michael Cowgill (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) put the Dukes on the scoreboard with a two-run homer. His two-run double started the Dukes' offense in Friday's 14-3 JMU win, and he later connected for a two-run homer in game one.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of the Stags until a six-run explosion by the Dukes in the sixth. Senior first baseman Nate Schill (Audubon, N.J./Audubon) tied the scored with an opposite-field homer to right. Dan Santobianco (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) broke the tie with a two-run double to center field later in the frame. The inning's scoring was capped on a two-run single from redshirt junior right fielder Mitchell Moses (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin).
The Dukes would also get a two-run blast to right from sophomore Kellen Kulbacki (Hershey, Pa./Hershey), who finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs. He is 6-for-7 with seven RBIs in the series.Â
JMU junior utility player Rob Altieri (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) had career highs of four hits and three RBIs.
The Stags took a 3-0 lead on a pair of hits, three JMU errors and a passed ball in the second inning. Senior shortstop Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) led off the inning with one of his two hits for the game. He was the only Stag with multiple hits, and his other hit was a double to the fence in left.
Redshirt senior left-hander Greg Nesbitt (Drumore, Pa./Solanco) evened his record to 1-1 with six innings on the mound. He allowed only one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out seven. Junior Bobby Lasko (Athens, Pa./Athens Area) earned the save by virtue of three scoreless innings of relief.
Junior left-hander Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) held the Dukes at bay for the first five innings. He limited JMU to two runs on five hits before being lifted with two outs in the sixth.
The series concludes Sunday at noon.
