FORT COLLINS, Colo., Sept. 1, 2006 - Freshman Nicole Fenner (Duluth, Ga./Wesleyan) had 13 kills and led all players with a .423 attack percentage as James Madison University defeated Florida Atlantic University 3-0 in volleyball in the 2006 Coors Invitational at Colorado State University.
JMU (4-1) defeated FAU (0-4) by game scores of 30-28, 30-22, and 30-27. In game one, the Dukes built a quick 10-4 lead only to see the Owls close to 12-10. JMU built the lead back to 20-15, but FAU was able to tie it at 25-25. Fenner recorded three kills in JMU's final five points to help the Dukes pull away for the game one win.
JMU again pulled out to an early lead in the second game and with the score at 17-14 in favor of the Dukes, senior Amanda Snead (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) served a six-point run to increase the lead to 23-14. JMU never trailed and went on to capture the game 30-22.
In the third game, the teams swapped leads and battled back and forth throughout with 10 ties and six lead changes.  The last tie was at 24-24. Then with the Dukes leading 27-26, Fenner connected on two more critical kills and junior Allyson Halls (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy) added a service ace to help the Dukes to the 30-27 win in the decisive game.
Fenner's 13 kills and .423 attack percentage each represented career highs in her young JMU career. She added eight digs and one service ace. Halls put down 10 kills and contributed three aces, three digs, and seven total blocks. Senior Bayli Stillwell (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Steamboat Springs) contributed 11 kills, six digs, and three block assists playing in her home state.
Junior libero Jena Pierson (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison) had 24 digs for an average of eight per game. Sophomore setter Lauren Miles (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) had a double-double with 38 assists (12.7 per game) and 10 digs along with five kills.
Florida Atlantic was led by Iana Andonova (Margate, Fla./Coral Spring) with a match-high 17 kills on .196 hitting. Janelle Sarauw (St. Thomas, V.I./Charlotte Amalie) had nine kills and four digs while setter Casey LaRocca (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) had 39 assists and three digs.
JMU will continue action in the Coors Invitational on Saturday at noon eastern time against Wake Forest and will face host Colorado State at 10 p.m. eastern time. Both matches will be available on live gametracker via the link on the JMU Volleyball home page.
